Recently, a string of active Pokemon GO players reported receiving these promo emails, even though they haven’t stopped playing. The email offered a promo code that could be redeemed for three egg incubators and a lucky egg. For players who like to hatch eggs or are still on the grind to level 40, that’s a pretty awesome gift pack.
The active players were confused at first, since they had never stopped playing the game, but it seems like the mystery may be solved. Many of these players linked their accounts to Facebook when the feature became available a few weeks ago and have stopped using their old login method (either Google or PTC). The theory is that the email is triggered after 14 days of not logging in via a previously active account method. By logging in with Facebook, instead of Google or PTC, these players met that list pull criteria.
After coming to this realization, many other players have decided to switch login methods and see if they can game the system. It’s possible that they’ll be able to get one or two free promo codes out of the con, but it seems highly likely that Niantic will resolve the exploit once the company becomes aware of it.
If you intend to try and earn one of the emails, we recommend switching login methods right now (if you haven’t already) and keeping an eye out for the email in about two weeks.
