Although the concept sounds simple enough, things are never quite that easy in Pokemon GO. The initial press release was a little shy on details about how claiming the five free Raid Passes would work, but players have hounded the support team enough to get some answers.

The most important thing to note about the Articuno Day Raid Pass promotion is that these are Free Raid Passes, not Premium Raid Passes. Unfortunately, that means they cannot stack above one. This means that to get full value out of the reward, players need to compete at least four Battle Raids during the event (because they can’t pick up the next free pass until they’ve used the one already in inventory).

The above email, shared by a member of The Silph Road subreddit, clearly explains that players cannot receive all five raid passes at once, as some trainers were hoping. As expected, the rural community isn’t thrilled about this limitation. Getting enough players together and finding a Gym with an ongoing battle four times in three hours may be a little too difficult outside of the bigger city areas.

During the Articuno event, players have a chance to encounter a shiny version of the Legendary bird during Battle Raids. Keep an eye out for the special spawn.

Until next time, good luck out there, trainers!

Pokemon GO is currently available in select regions on Android and iOS devices.
