Although Cobalion doesn’t seem like it’s going to be very strong in the Pokemon GO metagame according to early analysis, players are still going to want to collect the new creature for the sake of completion. That means that it’s almost time to take a break from catching the most powerful Unova Pokemon, gather up a few friends, and head out for some Battle Raids.

Cobalion is a Gen V Steel- and Fighting-Type Legendary. That means that Pokemon GO players are going to want to bust out their strongest Fire-, Fighting-, and Ground-types for these Raids. Cobalion isn’t quite as tough as some of the other Legendaries if the group has the right counters equipped and a high level group of players could pretty usually take these raids down with 3-5 participants. Lower level groups will want to stick with 5-7 players to be safe.

Entei - Fire Fang/Overheat
Heatran -Fire Spin/Fire Blast
Strong Counters
Blaziken - Counter/Blast Burn
Flareon - Fire Spin/Overheat
Moltres - Fire Spin/Overheat
Machamp - Counter/Dynamic Punch
Groudon - Mud Shot/Earthquake
Garchomp - Mud Shot/Earthquake
Good Counters
Hariyama - Counter/Dynamic Punch
Breloom - Counter/Dynamic Punch
Charizard - Fire Spin/Blast Burn
Toxicroak - Counter/Dynamic Punch
That’s all there is to it. Forming a party based on these recommendations should make it super simple to counter Cobalion and pick up that new Pokedex entry with a bit of luck. Remember to enter the raid with the right number of players though. Even though Cobalion isn’t as tough as some of the other Legendaries, we still recommend groups of 4 or more for the average player.
