Gyarados is a very popular creature from Gen 1, so it’s no surprise that Pokemon GO fans get excited every time there’s an opportunity to catch the creature. It takes a ton of candy to evolve a Magikarp into a Gyarados the old fashioned way, so catching an already evolved one from a raid is a great opportunity.

Magikarp and Gyarados both have the chance to be shiny, so keep an eye out for that special red spawn while raiding. It is in-theme with the Lunar New Year focus on red Pokemon, so hopefully there will be an increased shiny encounter chance and some trainers can add a new shiny to their dex this weekend.

Gyarados is a water- and flying-type, which makes it double weak to electric-type Pokemon. That’s good news for players who participate in a lot of Battle Raids, because they will likely already have some of the best counters powered up and equipped with the correct move sets. If not, no worries. There are a few solid roster options, so players should hopefully have one of these high-powered electric-types to rely on…

Electivire - Thunder Shock/Wild Charge

Magnezone - Spark/Wild Charge

Other Good Gyarados Counters

Jolteon - Thunder Shock/Thunderbolt

For now, players may want to keep hunting down the best Unova Pokemon in the game if improving their Battle Raid rosters is their primary goal. Be sure to check back in the near future for more Pokemon GO strategy guides, news, and updates. Until then, good luck out there, trainers!
