Trainers are able to pick up the new Field Research thanks to the ongoing Johto Festival. The special event features an increased spawn rate of Pokemon from that region, in addition to some new shinies and these limited time research tasks. Pokemon GO players will want to head out and complete as many of these as possible while they are available.

As you can see, these quests offer some incredibly valuable rewards. Two of the most exciting for players still trying to complete their Pokedex are likely the Militank and Porygon rewards. Militank, Porygon, and Porygon2 are all difficult spots to fill in on the Pokedex for the average player.
