Agatha normally takes the appearance of an old woman, roughly around the same age as Professor Oak, her former rival. However, at least one fan artist has imagined Agatha as being a lot spookier than she normally is.

Artist and Redditor ibralui took to the site to share their imagining of Agatha in the Pokemon series. The image is stunning to look at, and the community seems to be very impressed with the depiction. Agatha looks practically sinister here, flashing a toothless smile at the viewer as she lightly pets the arm of a towering Gengar standing behind her, which looks just as frightening as its trainer. While Agatha has always used a cane, she’s more hunched over here, and the shadows cast on both her and Gengar give the entire scene in an ominous, creepy tone.

Another pair of interesting touches include Agatha’s sweater, and her hands. The Pokemon Arbok’s pattern can be seen on her sweater; a fitting tribute, considering it was one of her Gen 1 Pokemon in the Elite Four. However, some were quick to point out that she appears to have three hands; one touching Gengar, and two others resting on top of her cane. Initially, it was assumed this was an accident, but artist ibralui says it was an intentional choice, making the artwork more unsettling to those who notice it.

While Agatha has always posed a challenge in the Pokemon games, she’s never been depicted as being overwhelmingly frightening. However, it makes a lot of sense for this art to show her as being scary. In the anime, gym leader Sabrina was depicted as being quite spooky, with a prevalence for Psychic-type Pokemon that seemed to be downright untouchable. Ghosts and Ghost-type Pokemon have also played a pretty scary role in the Pokemon games themselves, with Lavender Town’s haunting problem being one of the most memorable frights from the original Kanto generation of games.

Pokemon has had its share of bizarre and frightful encounters in the games, sometimes with humans, and sometimes with the Pokemon. While it’s unlikely that Agatha will make a comeback in the series looking quite this terrifying, considering the presence of mysterious ghost girls and other hauntings in the game, it wouldn’t be entirely out of character for Pokemon, either.
