Pokemon has been inspiring artists ever since the first game was released in 1996. However, Bug-type Pokemon are not the most popular pocket monsters, with artists favoring artwork depicting Eevee and their evolutions or even creating an engagement ring featuring male and female Pikachu. While they are not often at the center of attention, Bug-type monsters remain well-known by players who regularly come across these creatures in the forests of Pokemon games.

Reddit user karkajou shared an original artwork they made, representing various Bug-type Pokemon from Generation 1. This poster, titled “Insects from the Kanto region,” highlights some of the most popular creatures from Pokemon Red, Blue, and Yellow. The artist drew scientific versions of 12 different Pokemon, showing them from the side or top to showcase their most identifiable features. At the bottom of the poster, karkajou described each Pokemon, giving a better insight into the insects’ stories and the relations they have with their evolutions.
The first drawing shows a lateral view of Caterpie, describing it as a Butterfree larva. The second image gives a close-up of the creature’s tubercles, offering a different view of this Pokemon. After Caterpie, the chart shows its evolution Metapod, described as a Butterfree chrysalis. The final evolution of these creatures, Butterfree, gets two drawings highlighting the wing pattern difference between the males and females from this species.
Beedrill also gets its full evolution line, with drawings of its final form as well as descriptions of its larva Weedle and pupa Kakuna. The poster shows the evolution of Paras into a Parasect, describing its infection with Cordycipitaceae fungus that progressively takes control of the insect’s body. Karkajou represented a third evolution line, drawing Venonat and its evolution Venomoth. Unlike its original design from the Pokedex, Venonat features an elongated body, far from the traditional round and fluffy appearance it bears in all Pokemon games. Scyther and Pinsir are also present in this vintage science poster of Generation 1 Bug-type Pokemon.
