It’s certainly been a busy year for Pokemon enthusiasts, with many fans considering 2022 to be one of the most significant periods the series has seen in years. Though Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, the remakes for the fan-favorite Generation 4 games, were still relatively new and popular among the community when the new year began, they didn’t have the spotlight for very long before the next new title from Game Freak hit the shelves. Pokemon Legends: Arceus was a massive hit among the gaming community at large when it first released, priding itself on developing a new and refreshing experience for players while immersing them in a largely open world set in the Pokemon world’s ancient past. The influential new gameplay features introduced in Pokemon Legends: Arceus were further developed in the debut Generation 9 titles, Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, which have dominated social media since they arrived in November.

A Pokemon enthusiast by the name of Opposite_Village9112 on Reddit showed off their method of celebrating the year through a post on the site. The attached image featured the player’s Christmas tree this year, decorated generously with Pokemon-related items such as Poke Balls and adorable plushies of Pokemon including Weavile, Gible, and Smoochum. The tree even features a plush of Rayquaza, the legendary Pokemon of the sky, who is fittingly positioned at the very top of the tree.
The recent launch of Pokemon Scarlet and Violet have marked the beginning of a new generation of Pokemon games, and despite their much-criticized performance issues and abundance of glitches, the games have undoubtedly done much to reignite creativity and interest among the Pokemon community. Many players of the new games have actually found themselves enjoying them more than they anticipated, with some even going as far as to crown the Generation 9 titles as their new favorites in the entire series thanks to the rich story and major strides in gameplay mechanics.
Pokemon fans with more of an interest in the anime series have also had a lot to sink their teeth into lately, with the Pokemon Journeys series recently concluding along with the announcement of Ash retiring as the show’s protagonist after 25 years. While fans of the animated TV series can still look forward to one last short series focused on bidding farewell to the character, fans of the games and anime alike all have plenty of Pokemon content to look forward to in 2023.
Pokemon Scarlet and Violet are available on Nintendo Switch.
