Released in 2010 for Nintendo’s unique Nintendo DS handheld, Pokemon Black and White were the first titles to be released as part of the fifth generation of Pokemon games. Leveraging the powerful hardware of the Nintendo DS for its time, the games showcased massive graphical improvements compared to previous franchise entries and featured fully animated Pokemon sprites for the first time in series history. Following the two games’ critical and commercial success, the Nintendo DS sequels Pokemon Black 2 and Pokemon White 2 were released in 2012.

In a new post on the r/Pokemon subreddit, user entslaia delighted Pokemon fans with their cover art designs for hypothetical remakes of Pokemon Black and White. Bearing the titles “Pokemon Altered Black” and “Pokemon Constant White” and featuring stylish depictions of the legendary Pokemon Reshiram and Zekrom, the reimagined covers for the two games do a great job of paying tribute to the original titles while adding some unique artistic flair. Although there have been rumors about remakes of the classic titles for years, with some fans even finding possible references to the Unova region in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, Nintendo and Game Freak have yet to confirm that any new titles based on Pokemon Black and White are in development.
Redditors responding to the inspired fan art were incredibly impressed by entslaia’s tribute to the pair of classic games, with multiple comments praising the reimagined Pokemon Black and White cover art. Although many fans of the beloved Game Freak titles loved the idea of the company revisiting them with remakes or remasters, opinions were more sharply divided when it came to what the games should be called, with several users chiming in with their own suggestions for possible titles. Going against the grain of the comments, one Redditor stated that they “loathe the thought of these games getting a remake” because they felt the two games were fine as they were, and that a remake could ruin their legacy.
While a remake of Pokemon Black and White may never actually happen, it’s clear from the excitement around this fan art that Pokemon players are still passionate about the two titles over a decade on from their original release. And as gamers wait to hear what Nintendo and Game Freak have in store next for the long-running franchise, it seems that some Pokemon fans would be perfectly pleased to see the franchise take a stroll down memory lane for its next outing.
