The tradition of creating Pokemon fusions has been around since the beginning of the franchise. It not only allows fans to explore their own creative impulses–it also reveals subtle design elements of the Pokemon style and pushes the boundaries of what gamers can expect from actual Pokemon titles. Some of these creatures have even appeared in Pokemon fan games.

Redditor KattenGamerKG shared a looping sprite animation that features a fusion between Magcargo and Torterra, presented in the style of the original Gen 4 Pokemon sprites. Torterra is the final evolution of Turtwig, one of the three starter Pokemon available in the Sinnoh region. Meanwhile, Magcargo is the evolution of Slugma, both of which were introduced back in Gen 2. With Torterra being a Grass/Ground-type and Magcargo a Fire/Rock-type, their fusion has a very striking appearance.

KattenGamerKG’s Torterra/Magcargo fusion design appears to take its main body structure from Torterra, while the elemental aesthetic, eye, and tail take after Magcargo. Torterra is usually depicted with brown, wood-like limbs poking out from under its grass-covered shell. This design gives the creature’s legs the same rocky gray texture as Magcargo’s shell. The rock extends to the creature’s turtle shell, with Torterra’s spikes becoming small but active volcanoes. Additionally, the creature is shown with its head, tail, and the parts of its body right under the shell bathed in a steady flood of bright orange lava.

While this Pokemon fusion appears to take heavily after Torterra in appearance, the presence of such an obvious lava theme seems to suggest that its typing would differ. Grass, rock, and lava appear to be the creature’s dominant design elements. Given the original Pokemon’s typing, it appears that this fusion would be Grass/Fire-type. This may interest gamers, especially since as of writing, there do not appear to be any Grass/Fire-type Pokemon in the Pokemon franchise. It’s possible that this is because Grass-type Pokemon are weak to Fire-types, but Fire-type Pokemon are weak to Water-types and there’s at least one Fire/Water-type Pokemon out there.
