In a post on Reddit, a user known as Josilix shared a picture of a piece of artwork they made based on the Pokemon series. Using colored pencils, they decided to draw a replica of a “near mint” Charmander card they had. The results of this project were nothing short of stunning. In the picture, the Reddit user held the actual card next to the drawing of the card on a piece of paper. Not only had the artist managed to recreate the image of Charmander in exquisite detail, but they even added the weathering that made the real-life card appear in “near mint” condition.

It is hard to imagine the skill needed to create this realistic drawing of a Charmander card. According to Josilix, they used Luminance pencils to make the picture. In addition, they noted that hot-pressed watercolor paper was used to draw on. Interestingly, this is just one of several realistic pieces of artwork made by the artist. They had previously posted other drawings on Reddit for those wanting to see more. For example, they posted pictures of a Fury Bowser from Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury, and even 3D-looking candy.
Unsurprisingly, numerous members of the Pokemon community took notice of this amazing drawing since it was posted on Reddit. With nearly 2,000 upvotes in less than a day, many were blown away by the realism of the picture. “It looks like you could pick it up off the page. Fantastic!” kiwishrew said on Reddit. Another user known as Twisted_Prestzel85 noted that the use of shadows around the edges of the card made it look like it was a 3D object.
While this realistic drawing of the Charmander card is amazing, it is far from the only artwork created by talented fans of the series. With over 900 kinds of Pokemon, there is no shortage of species to choose from when making fanart. For example, one player made an Arceus origami based on Pokemon Legends: Arceus. It will be interesting to see what creations are shown off by talented gamers in the coming weeks. Perhaps Josilix will decide to draw even more realistic pictures of rare Pokemon cards.
