The DidYouKnowGaming? YouTube channel recently uploaded a video that shared surprising new Pokemon facts that most fans have never heard of before. The channel’s sources came from old Japan-only books and interviews featuring the Game Freak developers, designers, and Satoshi Tajiri, the creator of Pokemon himself. In one such book, Game Freak developer Akihito Tomisawa shared that the team was inspired by the martial arts, and originally wanted the trainers to earn different colors of belts as their Pokemon got stronger. Thinking further, the team was also contemplating having the players use these belts as training whips, but decided against the cruel-sounding treatment in the end.
Given that these books and interviews need heavy translation and contextualization, it is not surprising that the information surfaced only recently. Pokemon fans will likely enjoy the fun fact-filled video as it tackles each team’s inspiration for various parts of the video game. This includes how Tajiri gave away a Pokemon Red cartridge with a unique player name in the save file, how he was inspired to put fossils in every Pokemon title, the location inspiration for Kanto and Johto, as well as interesting design commentary about Unova’s champion Alder, and more.
Overall, learning new things about the Pokemon universe will likely draw in a lot of the franchise’s fanbase. The video already has over 200,000 views, and will hopefully push other content creators to investigate unique yet factual sources for interesting information about their favorite gaming fandoms.
