In Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, the Grand Underground is a massive network of underground caves that players can explore. Each cave is themed or is a combination of two themes. Most Pokemon found in each cave will fit the overall theme of the cave, but there are always a few odd ones out.

Updated by Kirkland Fortner, March 6, 2022: As seen in the lists below, there are tons of Pokemon to be found and captured in the Grand Underground. However, some of these creatures have traits that make them stand out from the crowd. That said, we are taking the opportunity to point out the most noteworthy Pokemon from each list. This addition can be found after the list under each location.
The Grand Underground in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl
The caverns, also known as hideaways, that players can find in the Underground are:
The Dazzling Cave: Ghost and Fairy-type Pokemon The Fountainspring Cave: Water The Grasslands Cave: Grass The Icy Cave: Ice The Riverbank Cave: Grass and Water The Rocky Cave: Rock The Sandsear Cave: Fire and Rock The Spacious Cave: Normal The Swampy Cave: Poison The Volcanic Cave: Fire; look in this cave for the best fire-type Pokemon in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl The Whiteout Cave: Snow
Here is a map of the Grand Underground and each of these cave locations:
Pokemon Available in the Grand Underground to Begin With
Not all the Grand Underground Pokemon will be available at the beginning of the game. Some have to be unlocked by playing through the game and attaining certain milestones. After that, the new Pokemon will appear in the Underground the next time the player visits. However, there are a large number available at the beginning of the game, and these are:
Absol: Grassland, Spacious, Dazzling Bidoof: Grassland, Riverbank, Spacious, Fountainspring Budew: Grassland, Riverbank, Spacious Buizel: Riverbank, Fountainspring Buneary: Grassland, Riverbank, Spacious, Whiteout Cascoon (Shining Pearl exclusive Pokemon): Grassland, Riverbank Cherubi: Grassland Combee: Grassland Croagunk: Riverbank, Swampy Duskull: Dazzling Elekid (Brilliant Diamond exclusive Pokemon): Dazzling, Whiteout Gastly: Dazzling Gastrodon: Fountainspring Geodude: Rocky, Spacious, Volcanic Glalie: Whiteout, Icy Gligar (BD): Swampy, Rocky Houndoom: Spacious, Dazzling, Volcanic, Sandsear Kricketot: Grassland, Riverbank, Spacious Lickitung: Fountainspring, Spacious, Riverbank, Swampy Machop: Spacious, Grassland, Whiteout Magby (SP): Volcanic, Sandsear Magnemite: Spacious, Whiteout, Icy Misdreavus: Dazzling Murkrow (BD): Spacious, Grassland, Riverbank Onix: Rocky, Volcanic, Sandsear Pachirisu: Spacious, Whiteout Pinsir (SP): Grassland, Riverbank Psyduck: Spacious, Fountainspring, Riverbank Ralts: Fountainspring, Dazzling Rhyhorn: Spacious, Rocky, Sandsear Roselia: Grassland, Swampy Scyther (BD): Grassland, Riverbank Shellos: Fountainspring Shinx: Spacious, Grassland, Whiteout Silcoon: Grassland, Riverbank Skorupi: Swampy, Rocky, Volcanic, Sandsear Smoochum: Dazzling, Whiteout, Icy Snorunt: Whiteout, Icy Swablu: Spacious, Fountainspring, Whiteout, Icy Swinub: Swampy, Whiteout, Icy Togepi: Fountainspring, Dazzling Wurmple: Grassland, Riverbank Zubat: Spacious, Grassland, Swampy
Out of these Pokemon that can be found in the beginning, Houndoom is the most noteworthy. Fire-types are difficult to come by in Sinnoh, and Houndoom’s good attacking stats make help it rise above the crowd. Additionally, its Speed is excellent, and its secondary Dark-typing gives it a healthy number of resistances and an immunity making it a solid choice. Houndoom’s abilities aren’t all that impressive, though FlashFire is the one that the player will want to go for, as additional immunities are never a bad thing.
Pokemon Available in the Grand Underground After TM96 Strength
After defeating the first two gyms of Brilliant Diamond or Shining Pearl, players can find their way to Hearthome City and unlock TM96 Strength. This will unlock a lot of new Pokemon available in the Underground.
Barboach: Grassland, Riverbank, Fountainspring, Swampy Bibarel: Fountainspring, Riverbank, Spacious Bronzor: Dazzling, Icy, Rocky Chingling: Spacious, Dazzling Golbat: Grassland, Spacious, Swampy Hoothoot: Grassland, Riverbank, Spacious, Fountainspring Meditite: Dazzling, Whiteout Ponyta: Volcanic, Sandsear Skuntank (BD): Spacious, Grassland, Riverbank Stunky (BD): Spacious, Grassland, Riverbank
Barboach is definitely worth looking into among these Pokemon, along with its evolution, Whiscash. They both have an excellent Water/Ground type combination, giving them only one weakness, Grass. They also have four resistances, and an immunity to Electric-type attacks. Ground is also an excellent attacking type, giving them some offensive power as well. The Abilities aren’t too great, but Oblivious’ ability to block Intimidate can come in handy.
Pokemon Available in the Grand Underground After Defog
Once players have unlocked Defog in Brilliant Diamond or Shining Pearl, another set of Pokemon becomes available.
Aipom: Spacious Girafarig: Dazzling Graveler: Spacious. Rocky, Volcanic Hippopotas: Rocky, Sandsear, Sandsear Kadabra: Dazzling Machoke: Spacious, Grassland, Whiteout Munchlax: Spacious, Grassland, Riverbank, Whiteout Purugly (SP): Spacious, Grassland, Riverbank Quagsire: Fountainspring, Swampy Wingull: Spacious, Fountainspring, Riverbank Wooper: Fountainspring, Swampy
Munchlax is definitely the highlight of this list. As far as Baby Pokemon go, Munchlax is certainly one of the better ones, as it has incredibly high HP and good Attack and Special Defense. Pure Normal is a good type, and it also gets access to the great Ability that is Thick Fat, further bolstering its defenses. However, the real reason why it’s so noteworthy is that the Grand Underground is by far the easiest place to catch one. A player would otherwise have to either breed Snorlax holding a Full Incense or catch one off of specific Honey Trees with a 1% encounter rate.
Pokemon Available in the Grand Underground After Badge 7
Glameow (SP): Riverbank, Fountainspring Gible: Fountainspring, Riverbank Luxio: Spacious, Whiteout Mr. Mime: Dazzling, Whiteout, Icy Pelipper: Spacious, Fountainspring, Riverbank Sneasel: Whiteout, Icy Snover: Whiteout, Icy Tentacool: Fountainspring, Riverbank, Swampy Tentacruel: Fountainspring, Riverbank, Swampy
Pelipper is interesting because it’s one of very few Pokemon that can have the Ability Drizzle, causing it to Rain whenever it is sent out. Rain is a very powerful weather condition, as it causes Water-type moves to deal 50% more damage than they normally would, and it makes the moves Hurricane and Thunder never miss. Pelipper is capable of learning Hurricane. Combine this with its Flying-type STAB and its decent Special Attack, and it’s capable of doing some heavy damage. Water/Flying is also a very good type combination. It has six resistances, an immunity to Ground, and only to weaknesses to Rock and Electric. The Electric weakness is a 4x one though, so players do need to beware of that.

Pokemon Available in the Grand Underground After TM99 Waterfall
A few new Pokemon become available upon reaching this milestone, but one in particular is noteworthy here.
Gabite: Fountainspring, Riverbank Mantyke: Spacious, Riverbank Octillery: Fountainspring, Riverbank Whiscash: Fountainspring, Riverbank, Swampy
Gabite and its evolution, Garchomp, are noteworthy for their power alone. With Garchomp’s massive 130 Attack stat, high Speed, and the powerful offensive combination that is Ground/Dragon, it’s a force to be reckoned with. This type combination isn’t as strong defensively though, as it comes with only three resistances, one immunity to Electric, and a debilitating 4x Ice-type weakness. Still, its attack power is incredible. A player can easily get Gabite to evolve into Garchomp this late into the game too, because, unlike most Pseudo-Legendaries, it evolves at only level 48.
Pokemon Available in the Grand Underground After National Pokedex
There are also plenty of Pokemon that will be available in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl’s Grand Underground after unlocking the National Pokedex. Some of these Pokemon are available earlier in the Underground, but they have either catch rates significantly lower than 1%, or they are available in one of the above tiers but only for one of the two versions of this game.

There are several Pokemon here that stand out for various reasons. Here is a very brief overview of the noteworthy ones:
Players can get the other Starters here (Turtwig, Chimchar, and Piplup) without needing to trade. Larvitar, Beldum, and Shelgon are all great picks for the Battle Tower, as each of them has a final evolution that boasts an immense amount of strength This is the only place in the game where Tangela/Tangrowth appears. So, if this is one of the player’s favorites, they have to grab them in the Underground.
