Cynthia has a powerful Pokemon team that includes heavy hitters like a level 63 Lucario and a level 66 Garchomp, so Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl players usually have to face her using a team of equally-strong Pokemon. However, some Pokemon BDSP players decide to make things a little harder on themselves by applying restrictions to their team setup, which is exactly what Reddit user Mudkip727 did.

Mudkip727 took to the Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl subreddit to show off the team they used to defeat Cynthia and become Pokemon League Champion in the Sinnoh region. If Mudkip727 is to be believed, their team consisted of a single level 69 Bidoof that they nicknamed Doofy. Bidoof is one of the weaker Pokemon in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, with players rarely featuring the creature as a viable member of their team, so this is an impressive feat to say the least.

According to Mudkip727, their Bidoof had the moves Curse, Crunch, Amnesia, and Quick Attack. They explained that Cynthia’s Spiritomb tries to use physical attacks when going up against a Pokemon whose physical stat is lower than its special stat, which is something that applied to Mudkip727’s Bidoof. Mudkip727 then used Amnesia on Spiritomb and so that made it keep using Sucker Punch. Mudkip727 then used this opportunity to spam Curse, boosting their Bidoof and allowing them to take out the rest of Cynthia’s Pokemon team one by one.

There are definitely easier ways to defeat Cynthia, but beating Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl with just a Bidoof is definitely one of the stranger methods. It’s unclear if Mudkip727 only had a Bidoof on their team for the majority of the playthrough or if they had a full team until the end and then decided to use Bidoof, but it’s impressive regardless.

Other Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl players have also used Bidoof to become Pokemon League Champion, with some using a single Bidoof as Mudkip727 did. Others still have used an entire team of Bidoofs to defeat the Elite Four, which is definitely easier than using one Bidoof but should still pose a significant challenge.

Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl are out now, exclusively for the Nintendo Switch.
